You Are What You Eat.!
The following is an exact excerpt from pages 216 in my book: “Youthing: Look Younger, Stay Healthier, Live Longer.”
BUTTER VERSUS MARGARINE:
Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had invested in the research wanted a pay back, so they put their heads together to find a solution. It was a white substance with no benefits to the body or food appeal, so they added the yellow colouring and clever new flavourings and a couple of vitamins and sold it to people to use in place of butter. Both margarine and butter have the same number of calories.
According to a Harvard Medical Study, eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter. Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods. Butter has many nutritional benefits, margarine has a few and only because they are added!
Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavours of food. Margarine is ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC.
My father refused to let my mum buy margarine; he said it tasted like plastic. I don’t think he ever knew how exactly right he was.
This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).
AVOID THE WHITE STUFF!!!
White rice, pastas, cereals, and breads are denatured and destroyed, along with all other grains that have been polished, bleached, or starched. Anything made with white flour you would be wise to avoid.
Mineral Thieves People are unconsciously stealing needed minerals directly from their own bones due to diets consisting of processed sugar, flour, soda, etc.
Osteoporosis These kinds of NON foods create such a high degree of acidity that the body needs a tremendous quantity of minerals to keep the bodily fluids in balance. When people don’t get enough minerals from their food, the body is forced to steal it.
Sugar Avoid white sugar (use Xylitol it has zero calories and tastes and looks like sugar).
CHEATING THE SUGAR CONTENT:
Food companies also use the ingredients stacking trick to intentionally leave you with the wrong impression about what’s really in their food products.
For example, one company makes a nutrition bar that’s absolutely loaded with sugar, but the way they’ve arranged the ingredients prevents sugar from appearing as the #1 ingredient.
Instead, the first ingredient is rice. But looking further down the label, you’ll find all the following forms of sugar, all in the same ‘nutrition’ bar: Sugar, Sucrose, High-fructose corn syrup, Dextrose. Add all these up, and the #1 component in the bar is, indeed, sugar (or sugary substances). But the manufacturer has used ingredient-stacking to make you think the top ingredient is actually rice.
I wrote earlier about the dangers of Candarel, NutraSweet, Equal, and Spoonful, because they contain Aspartame. I want to add another to that list: Agave nectar.
This is being touted in magazines as low GI organic, even diabetic friendly. It is none of those. Due to the labels on the Agave bottle, people fall into the illusion that this particular ‘natural’ sweetener has been used for thousands of years by the native people in central Mexico.
The refined fructose in Agave nectar is much more concentrated than the fructose in high fructose corn syrup. The dangers of fructose are well known, and Agave Nectar is almost 100% fructose.
As mentioned, the one natural, alternative sweetener that has no calories, no blood sugar effects, no chemical toxicity, and tastes great, is Xylitol. Stevia is also safe but has an aftertaste some people find unpleasant.
TO SALT OR NOT TO SALT:
Pros:
Unrefined sea salt is essential for survival. If properly balanced, unrefined sea salt is an effective way to keep water inside the system, helping keep bodily fluids and the pH in balance while it helps prevent the body from becoming too acidic. Salt is a vitally important component of bone. If salt levels are too low, depression, hormonal imbalances, and cancer may appear.
Cons:
Anti-caking agents such as aluminium are used in the salt refining process. Consistent use of table salt could lead to an overload of this potentially harmful heavy metal.
Recent research links aluminium accumulation to Alzheimer’s disease. That we need salt is unquestionable. However, it is simply the type of salt we use that is the solution.
HIMALAYAN CRYSTAL SALT:
Is beneficial because it contains 84 minerals along with trace elements that come alive when dissolved in water.
This salt can actually help to return your body to its optimal pH balance. The beneficial living nutrients in Himalayan Crystal Salt can be easily processed by your body. And, since it’s not pulling excessive amounts of water from your cells, it doesn’t dehydrate your body the way that common salt can.
This balancing ability comes from a double-blind study that was conducted by the Inter-University of Graz, Austria. It contains Sodium, Calcium, Magnesium, Iron, Potassium, Zinc, Sulphur, Selenium, Phosphorous, Manganese, and Chloride. You can buy it from most health food stores.
VITAMINS: DO WE NEED THEM?
Apart from my own research, I am totally convinced of the need for and efficacy of vitamins, by two incredible women.
After the death of my father-in-law, we brought my mum-in law Meg, who was almost blind, to come and live with us in Cape Town. We decided to invite her lifelong friend Nan to come and stay for a few months as a companion for Meg and to help cheer her up.
As Nan was eighty-four, was travelling alone, and needed to catch a plane from Utah to New York, then another plane from New York to Johannesburg, and then fly down to Cape Town, we had organised with the airlines for her to have a wheelchair and assistance. Nothing could have prepared us for the apparition that appeared on the day of her arrival.
Literally running towards us was a slim woman in a pink track suit and pink trainers, hair piled fashionably on top of her head. She had refused all assistance and I could see why. She didn’t need it!
After a couple of weeks of observing her boundless energy, I decided one day to ask what her secret was? She answered in that soft American accent, “Vitamins, honey, vitamins”. She then proceeded to show me her case of vitamins. Apparently, she belonged to a vitamin club; her huge family and many friends bought bulk vitamins at greatly reduced prices. She told me how many of them, both family and friends, were over ninety; some were over a hundred years old and still enjoying life living independently, or with their families.
The second influential woman was Dr Aiko Hormann, a brain scientist.
I brought Dr Aiko over to South Africa from Canada to minister after watching her on a TV programme. She has an amazing ministry and has spoken all over the world, from Russia to Honolulu. She stayed with us for three weeks.
Dr Aiko has a brilliant mind and at eighty was incredibly fit and energetic. She arrived with a suitcase of vitamins, even more than Nan had.
Both women had a lot in common. Very strong faiths, both were slim, looked decades younger than their chronological ages, both had sharp active minds and healthy bodies, and both took mega doses of vitamins.
I believe that back in time we could have received everything we needed naturally from our food, but this is definitely no longer the case.
